Hello Forum,
The ongoing issue of exterior facades has been on our minds for a long time. It’s frustrating because our desired facade is either too expensive or simply not available (mostly due to the cost factor). We are currently planning our new build and are still searching for the right "look." For cost reasons, we have decided on brick slips but would like to go for something a bit more rustic.
Our dream for a long time was the "Irish" look—meaning a natural stone facade—but unfortunately that is not financially feasible for us. So now, with brick slips, this is our last attempt.
Something along the lines of a country house, cottage, Irish, Scottish style.

Question:
What is the difference between brick slips and veneer stones? Does anyone know a supplier of "rustic" brick slips that they would recommend? What should be considered for exterior facades? Our architect has planned a cost of 152 EUR per m² (net). Since labor is probably the largest cost factor here, I would be interested in a price range for "standard" brick slips.
We think it might not be feasible, but I would still like to make one last desperate attempt.
Good luck

Based on your preferences, I would lean towards lightweight concrete facing bricks. We are currently looking into them ourselves, but for an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) with very unattractive and cracked plaster (the ETICS is only 1.5 years old but has been unsightly from the start, and unfortunately there is no warranty since the company has "disappeared").
The brick slips are lighter and thinner, but I have only found regular patterns, basically like traditional bricks. I don’t like that at all.
The lightweight concrete veneers allow for truly rustic, natural stone looks. They weigh more (starting from 21 kg/m2 (4.3 lbs/ft2)), which should definitely not be a problem on a solid external wall without ETICS (amateur opinion!) and, according to frequently found information, is also possible on ETICS. Maximum weights up to 25 kg/m2 (5 lbs/ft2) are usually specified, but unfortunately the manufacturer of our ETICS panels provides no information on this. At least I know that plenty of anchors were used.
These veneers are available starting at about 30 euros/m2 (about 2.80 USD/ft2). Since we need lightweight options, we will probably go with the Rimini manufacturer, whose prices start at 45 euros/m2 (about 4.20 USD/ft2). Of course, it’s possible to find cheaper options with more searching. It is important for us to choose a major manufacturer with a "brand," since we can’t do everything at once and want to be able to reorder the slips later if needed.
We will apply the veneers ourselves, which should not be a problem—it’s similar to tiling. One has to decide whether to pay 100 euros/m2 (about 9.30 USD/ft2) just for labor. If the budget allows, I would not hesitate to do that. But if money is tight, you either have to do it yourself or opt for a cheaper standard solution like plastering, for example.
