Hello everyone,
We are still at the very beginning of planning our future house.
The bank is currently reviewing the possible loan amount, and once that’s settled, we will take a closer look at the zoning plan / building permit and start considering the general design of the house. After that, we will begin searching for a home construction company.
The first important decision will be about the material for the shell of the building:
- Solid construction (e.g., masonry or concrete)
- Timber frame with appropriate insulation
- Timber frame insulated with straw (straw bale house)
We are quite fascinated by the idea of a straw bale house because there are hardly any other building methods with such a good ecological footprint during the construction phase. The insulation provided by the 40 cm (16 inches) thick straw bales alone is very effective and should meet KfW40 standards (yes, we want KfW40, so please no discussion about that here).
According to our current research, the costs are not much lower than other options, but it does offer the opportunity for a lot of DIY work, which we are excited about!
The house will have one full story and an attic with a rather low knee wall (50 cm (20 inches), maybe a bit more). The zoning plan/building permit doesn’t allow for more.
Does anyone here have experience with a straw bale house or something similar?
Best regards,
Specki

If you feel like it, maybe you could share some progress photos? Great project, my compliments!

We are at the beginning of planning a house and want to choose a sustainable construction method. We have already found an architect with the appropriate expertise, but so far the architect seems to have little positive experience with the KfW funding, the underlying rules and calculation methods, and the involved energy efficiency experts.
@Sebastian Acht: Was it complicated to provide the KfW40+ certification for the straw bale house? How did you approach this? (I would normally ask this as a private message, but I haven’t posted enough yet to send private messages)

I’m curious which architect you found. By the way, you’re now asking “Sebastian,” but you probably meant @Sebastian Acht.https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/

Sebastian Acht5 Nov 2021 15:15@mic.pah I looked for a KfW consultant in our area but unfortunately couldn’t find anyone confident enough to take it on, so I expanded the search radius and was helped in Tauch near Leipzig. Sebastian Brauer calculated the wall construction to match the KfW requirements and completed the KfW applications at the end of the construction phase. Everything worked out very well. If that is too far from you, I would now look for energy consultants and call them one by one. I only sent him drawings for the wall structure, ceiling structure, wall/ceiling connections, etc.

even though this topic is a few days old, I want to pick up your information from this thread again. We want to build our house as a load-bearing straw bale construction and are already quite advanced in the planning phase. However, the topic of KfW funding has recently come up, and until now we had planned for KfW 55. This standard will expire on January 31, 2022, without replacement. So we are currently under some time pressure to still somehow take advantage of this funding.
In my search, I came across your somewhat older post where you mentioned achieving KfW 40+, and I would like to discuss this with you. Since I am new to this forum, I am unable to send you a direct message.
Could you please contact me about this?
Thank you in advance.
