Dear experts,

I am currently doing some spot repairs inside a 6-year-old house. Playing children have left some severe stains and damaged a few edges (plaster chipped off over the corner profiles).

I watched a professional during the 5-year warranty repairs. He always used a roller, not a brush, and didn’t just cover the small blemished spots but also rolled fairly dry over the clean wall areas around them to avoid hard edges. Is this a good approach?

I bought the same high-quality white paint (70 EUR/10 liters), very high-quality rollers, and other accessories. Still, the repaired spots are visible, although only upon close inspection.

I don’t want to repaint the whole wall, just spot repairs. Are there any other professional tips to make the transitions even less noticeable? I rubbed the transitions with my palm for a while, which already helped quite a bit. Surely there are better tricks than rubbing by hand? Maybe with fine sandpaper or a cloth? Or with water?

I look forward to learning from the professionals’ experience.

Best regards

No, it hardly works because the old paint changes tone over time due to the indoor climate and the people living there. Since strangers lived there before, I would feel the need to repaint everything—if only for the sake of comfort.

Thank you @ypg for your feedback. No, you must have misunderstood. I built/moved in myself and the house is now 6 years old. A year ago, a professional already did some touch-ups and it looked great, but unfortunately the kids keep causing damage. Especially now during the pandemic when everyone is home playing from morning until evening. Here there is a bad stain, there damage to the corner profile. And I can’t repaint the entire house every year. That’s why I’m looking for tips on how to repair these spots.

You can use melamine sponges to clean white walls and remove stains. However, don’t overdo it, as you might remove too much paint.

The wooden rocket built by hand was launched in the living room and shortly afterward, the wall looked like this due to a rough landing...

I can’t call a painter every time something like this happens or repaint the entire wall. And with kids at home during the pandemic, I can’t always scold them when accidents happen. That’s why I prefer to regularly do touch-ups and keep everything in top condition.

@guckuck2 Great tip about the cleaning sponges, I use them regularly too. However, I'm looking for advice on how to blend patches smoothly into the rest of the wall. Doing it by hand worked fairly well and even slightly darkened the new paint. But there must be an even better method or trick?
