chris198022 Oct 2011 15:34Hello, we bought a 10-year-old house. The interior was finished, but now everything on the outside is up to us. We still need to pave the yard and install splash protection around the house. We have received several quotes, and we were shocked. Gravel, dimpled membrane, and concrete edging around the house (36m/118 feet) are estimated to cost around €11,000. That’s more than we actually planned to spend.
Are there any alternatives? Is the concrete edging necessary? We have seen some cases where they only used gravel without any edging, and the paving starts right after that. Would that be a viable solution?
- Just for information: it’s not that we have no money left. We haven’t even taken out the full loan yet. That’s not the issue. But when you see that splash protection and paving (70m²/753 square feet) come to about €25,000, you start to really consider the balance between cost and benefit.

- 36 m (118 feet) lawn edging, approximately 180.00€
- Dimpled membrane or weed fabric, approximately 50.00€
- One ton of gravel, approximately 15-20€
- 15 bags of cement, approximately 30.00€
- Or ready-mix concrete, approximately 150-200€
- Two tons of crushed stone, approximately 80.00-100.00€
- Transport costs depending on distance, up to 200€
Material costs are around 600.00€ to 800.00€, depending on the state, but never more than 1000.00€ to 1200.00€.
If the workers earn 6000.00€ per month, the price is reasonable. Otherwise, it is complete rip-off. Setting 36 m (118 feet) of edging in concrete can be done by two experienced masons or landscape gardeners in one day. Then they still have one day for laying the membrane and adding the crushed stone, which actually does not take a full day. If I add another day for earthworks, such as digging out the splash protection, I come to about 50 hours for two workers. At an hourly rate of 60.00€, this amounts to 3000.00€. That’s roughly 8000.00€ for the contractor in three days. So the price should not be more than about half higher than that. You can also do it without edging. But I would recommend embedding stones in concrete; otherwise, after 1-2 years, you will have to fix everything again because it will be uneven and crooked.
