Hello, I am planning to build a house in the near future and have been thinking about the masonry. Since I am not an expert, here are my general questions about masonry:

What do you think about mixed masonry?
To best combine the properties of the bricks, I would prefer sand-lime bricks for the interior walls and aerated concrete blocks (36.5cm (14.4 inches)) for the exterior walls.

Does this combination of sand-lime bricks and aerated concrete blocks make sense? Could using mixed masonry cause cracks?

Thanks everyone!

Many general contractors (GCs) here in northern Germany do this. So it generally does not seem to be a problem.

Supposedly, white goes well with white.

You’ll get cracks anyway. The question is whether they will appear at the ceiling/wall junction as well.

Thank you for the feedback!

Are there any other experiences with mixed masonry?

Not only in the north! It is generally not a problem and even advisable! Make sure to pay attention to proper wall connection (masonry anchors).

We are currently building. Exterior walls are made of Ytong, load-bearing interior walls of sand-lime brick, and non-load-bearing interior walls of gypsum wallboard. Advantage: only 10cm (4 inches) thick instead of 17.5cm (7 inches) for the sand-lime brick.
