Hello everyone,
can anyone share their experience with Liapor (expanded clay) walls?
We are considering building with a turnkey provider who completes the Liapor wall in the factory.
What are your experiences? Advantages / disadvantages compared to other wall systems?
How does it perform in summer? In winter?
Regards
Alex

Since I have been considering the choice of material for a while and I am not a fan of aerated concrete and can't really warm up to bricks either, I came across expanded clay walls. Among others, I am in contact with Lechner Massivhaus and Kastell. Although we are still at an early stage, Kastell in particular leaves a good impression. However, they told me right away that they can only provide the shell construction for us, as their partner does not travel that far.
I don’t have any prices yet. We also do not want any insulation, just the plastered wall, no ventilation system if possible, and that’s it.
What have you decided on? Have you already been able to compare prices? Is an expanded clay wall really that versatile?

No wall system is an all-rounder. Each has its own specific advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of lightweight expanded clay concrete (LECA) precast walls (my very subjective opinion)
- Monolithic wall construction possible
- Very easy to drill/simple wall mounting
- Very easy to drill/simple wall mounting
- Good sound insulation with thin (interior) wall thicknesses
- Personally sufficient thermal insulation
Disadvantages:
- Inflexible once planning is completed (electrical, window positions, etc.)
- Not “waterproof” without exterior plaster —> water can penetrate the wall. However, it does not absorb water as much as aerated concrete
- Thermal insulation in monolithic construction is less favorable compared to, for example, aerated concrete
- Few manufacturers —> limited selection

I already shared some thoughts on this, and if I remember correctly, @Curly built with Weton (based in the Limburg area) and was satisfied. Dennert also comes to mind; in my pumice area, Bisotherm is also commonly used. I don’t see a fundamental difference between pumice and expanded clay to be world-changing; from my point of view, they are like siblings with different densities.
