Hello,

I haven’t received any answers to my question in another forum yet. I think this is a better place because the topic fits better here.
We want to buy electric bikes and are now a bit confused since we read on a website about bike storage boxes that the battery only delivers half its power in cold winter conditions. Also, it was mentioned that you have to fully recharge it every two months. Is this true? Have you had similar experiences?
Thank you very much for your answers.

I have no knowledge about electric bikes, but a bit about batteries.
I think if you keep the bike inside (above 10°C (50°F)) and only take it outside for about half an hour to ride somewhere, then bring it back inside, it probably won’t harm the battery.
If you park your bike outside in temperatures around -10°C (14°F) and leave it there all the time, I can imagine the battery might suffer quite a bit.
But if it’s only outside for a short time — a few minutes, or maybe an hour or two — that shouldn’t affect the battery much.

It’s generally a good idea to discharge the battery when you’re not using it and only charge it when you’re going to use it soon.
Batteries don’t like sitting fully charged in a corner for a long time.
They also don’t like being charged only partially all the time.
Ideally, you should fully discharge and fully charge the battery and only charge it when you plan to ride in the next few days.
If you don’t move your bike for two months, I can well imagine that the battery won’t hold much charge.
That’s not exactly healthy for the battery either.

Maybe the dealer you want to buy from can lend you a bike for a couple of weeks to test it out for a small fee.
You could say you want to check its everyday usability first — that’s understandable.

Then you’ll see what works and what doesn’t.

Also remember that the battery won’t last forever; you’ll probably have to replace it after a few years.

Best regards

Thank you

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, the retailer was right. As you already mentioned, storing it indoors does no harm. However, frost does cause damage. In December, I already heard the first acquaintance complaining. He needs to buy a new battery but plans to do so only in summer.

Hello,

I work at a pizza delivery service and we also use electric bikes. As long as they are stored indoors and not left outside for too long, it’s okay. But if they stay outside for too long, the battery will suffer.
