Hello everyone,

I recently moved into a basement apartment that is generally very cozy, but I have a problem with my KALLAX shelves where some compartments become noticeably damp. It’s not exactly water damage, but rather a constant, slightly elevated level of moisture that can be felt directly on the shelves, especially on the back panels and bottoms. Since I know wood and wood-based materials, I’m concerned about the long-term stability and the potential for mold growth.

Has anyone experienced damp KALLAX compartments in basement apartments? How did you identify the problem, and what solutions did you find? Does this occur more often near exterior walls or damp areas of the basement? I would appreciate practical advice, especially preventive measures, since I can’t simply move the shelves out of the room. Thank you in advance!

occur relatively often because basement apartments generally have higher indoor air humidity compared to living spaces on upper floors. KALLAX shelves are usually made of particleboard with a laminated finish, which may resist moisture to some extent but are not permanently waterproof.

I recommend the following measures:

1. Measure indoor air humidity and keep it below 60%, for example by regular ventilation or using a dehumidifier.
2. Protect the shelves at contact points with walls using moisture-resistant films or coatings.
3. Maintain as much distance as possible from exterior walls, using spacers or edge protectors if needed.
4. Use open storage containers in the KALLAX compartments to improve air circulation.

Direct contact with a damp wall is a common cause of such issues. In case of more serious moisture problems, the building’s structure should be checked, for example waterproofing and drainage.

I had this issue in the past. Ventilation worked best for me. If possible, adding a dehumidifier helps. Keeping a gap between the unit and the wall is important. Wood does not handle moisture well.

I am worried about long-term stability and possible mold growth

I completely understand your concern; it’s really stressful. I had similar worries myself when I lived in a basement apartment and my shelves became damp. Fortunately, using small moisture absorbers with granules helped me back then – a simple solution, but it actually makes a difference.

Additionally, I recommend treating the wood regularly with a commercially available wood preservative that also protects against moisture. While it’s not a permanent solution, it does help strengthen the material.

If the situation isn’t too severe, I would definitely avoid placing the shelf directly against the exterior wall and check regularly for any early signs of mold. Especially in basement rooms, mold can spread quickly, which no one wants.

I hope you find a practical solution. If you like, I can share more tips about basement air quality and furniture near damp walls.
