Hello,
I want to lay a weed fabric around my rose bushes. It’s a long hedge. However, the weeds are growing so aggressively underneath that I can’t keep them under control. I’m concerned whether enough water will still penetrate down to the roots. Has anyone had experience with this? Can I simply place it over the weeds now in winter so that they die off underneath?

With a geotextile fabric, water always passes through easily: water simply flows through it. I find these materials very effective. We use such fabric in our rock garden. Water drains without any problems, and no weeds grow through it anymore.

How long can it be left like this, and does it need to be replaced at some point?

The fleece in the rock garden is placed directly on the soil, so it’s soil, fleece, then the stones on top. This setup lasts indefinitely.
However, I’m not sure if you are talking about the same type of fleece.

There are different types. They vary in thickness and therefore permeability.
I would try using a medium-weight fabric. Just place a few stones on top, and that should be fine.

Do stones have to be put on there? I was thinking of using bark mulch...?
