ᐅ Experience with KALLAX shelves next to old EXPEDIT units – color differences?

Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question about furniture combinations: I own several old EXPEDIT shelves from IKEA, which I really appreciate and use regularly. Now I’ve noticed that I would like to add some KALLAX units as well—mainly because this new series is the successor to EXPEDIT and looks quite similar.

However, I have concerns about color differences. Does anyone have experience with how pronounced the color variations are between the old EXPEDIT shelves and the newer KALLAX units?

I’m asking especially because I plan to place the furniture pieces very close to each other in one room and want to achieve a as harmonious look as possible. It’s important for me to know whether the wood tones, white shades, or surface textures differ noticeably, or if these differences can be balanced out with some distance or suitable decor.

I would be very grateful for your experiences, tips, or concrete advice!

You can only see the difference if you look very closely.

That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. Thanks to everyone who replied so far. I think I will complement with the KALLAX series and brighten it up with colored boxes.

One last question: Does anyone know if there are differences in stability or assembly when combining and screwing together both models? I want to secure the shelves well so they stand firmly side by side without wobbling or becoming uneven.

Regarding stability when combining EXPEDIT and KALLAX, I can say the following:

- Both series are very similar in dimensions, so a direct connection is often possible.
- KALLAX is more stable in some areas due to modernized material thicknesses.
- When connecting directly to EXPEDIT, there may be slight offsets that can be compensated with spacers or plastic washers.
- Recommended: Use wall fixings for both shelves. This minimizes wobbling and prevents tipping.
- Make sure to use appropriate screws or fasteners suitable for furniture panels.

If you work carefully, you should have no problems securely connecting both units.

That’s exactly how I’ll do it. Thanks for the tips, now I have everything I need.
