Hello dear forum members,

Our new build is about to start, and we currently have the following question regarding which combination of roller shutter box and insect screen would be the most practical.

We have two offers that differ as follows:

- Roller shutter box with a single roller tube / plastic slats / shutter guides and insect screen as tensioned or pivot frame on the windows and doors
- External roller shutter boxes made of EPS including an additional roller tube for the insect screen / double guide rails on the window / aluminum slats

Perhaps someone here already has experience with boxes where the insect screen is integrated, or has advice or an opinion about these systems?

Thank you!
Best regards, Stefan

Hello Stefan,

We had exactly this installed from the manufacturer Beck+Heun:
- Flush-mounted shutter boxes made of EPS, including an additional shaft for the insect screen / double guide rail on the window / aluminum armor

I would definitely do it again. I regret not having it installed everywhere. It makes particular sense with floor-to-ceiling windows on the upper floors. Advantages:
- clean solution, the frame is not damaged by screwing on a retrofit solution
- no external shutter box when installing an insect roller blind later

Advantages compared to usually cheaper retrofit tension frames:
- can be easily rolled up in summer if you want to look out of the window
- does not need to be installed or removed in spring/autumn (most people stop doing this anyway - but then it permanently blocks the view)
- requires no extra storage space
- does not damage the seals like a tension frame

So, I can only recommend it.

I initially wanted this as well. However, with my relatively tall floor-to-ceiling windows (249cm (98 inches)), there were issues because the manufacturers do not approve it. The mesh is not designed to remain taut at this height, so it is not offered. Additionally, the small rollers built into the casings can only spool a limited length; otherwise, they become too thick inside the casing.

I therefore chose it for two windows that are not floor-to-ceiling. It looks quite neat. To still be able to reach the closure mechanism on the screen, there is a cord hanging down with a small plastic piece at the bottom. That, however, does not look as tidy.
