Floorboards are screwed onto battens; these are squared timber sections measuring 6x8 cm (2.4x3.1 inches), which are loosely laid on the floor at regular intervals. The battens can be placed directly on top of the carpet; so the layers would be 1. carpet, 2. battens, 3. floorboards. In existing rooms, this is rarely possible due to height restrictions.
However, built-in carpets pose other challenges; without proper ventilation, fine particles and microscopic organisms in the carpet can cause unpleasant odors. This musty smell can be quite noticeable—I have encountered this issue before as an expert.
