ᐅ Experience: Do odors tend to linger in the KALLAX after painting?

Hello everyone,

I am about to paint my new KALLAX shelf from IKEA myself. I’m wondering: does the smell of the paint or primer usually linger for a long time with the KALLAX? I plan to have the shelf in the living room, so a strong or persistent odor would be quite bothersome. Has anyone experienced how long the smells from painting this kind of furniture typically last? Perhaps there are differences depending on the type of paint or room ventilation?

Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

Water-based paints lose their odor quickly, usually becoming unnoticeable within 2-5 days.

That is probably the best-case scenario.

With chipboard, the smell can also come from the material itself if it remains damp.

Very important: If the painted cabinet is not completely dry or if air circulation is poor, moisture can get trapped under the paint and cause unnecessary odors.

I strongly recommend thoroughly airing out the furniture before painting and then using acrylic water-based paint, just as you planned.

Odors usually disappear after 3 to 7 days if you use water-based varnish and ensure good ventilation.

Particle boards absorb moisture, so avoid applying too thick a coat of varnish and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Thank you for the information so far!

Are there any experiences regarding whether priming affects odor development before painting? I have heard that some primers have a very strong smell and that especially with chipboard, a primer is not only important for the finish but might also increase or reduce the intensity of odors.

What would you recommend – primer or no primer when painting the KALLAX, if the goal is to avoid unpleasant odors?

Primers can definitely affect the odor. Many inexpensive solvent-based primers tend to smell stronger and linger longer than water-based paints.

My understanding is that without primer, the paint might soak more into the wood or particle boards, which can also increase odors.

My recommendation: use water-based primer and paint together if possible. Make sure to ventilate well after application and apply only thin layers.

I agree with this. The misconception that primer always has a stronger odor or causes more exposure needs to be corrected.

In fact, a suitable primer can help improve paint adhesion and thus reduce odor, as less paint soaks into the particleboard.

However, this requires choosing the right product (water-based) and careful, professional workmanship.

Wow, this is really exciting!

I didn’t use a primer back then, but maybe that would have been more helpful for my work. I just felt that the shelf smelled a bit stronger than I expected. But as you mentioned, the smell was gone after a few days.

Now I would definitely try that next time. Thanks for your tips, I’m looking forward to doing it better next time :-)
