Our old masonry expansion joint (from 1986) had cracks in the sealant from the bottom up to the attic, so I renewed the entire joint. The joint is not located in the middle of the house but on the last 10cm (4 inches) on the left side of the house (end terrace). By the way, I don’t really understand why there is a joint there, as it is basically a gap between the wall and the last row of bricks. In any case, I scraped out the old Sikaflex sealant, and behind it was a crumbling sealant, similar to what is used today as a compressible foam tape. Now I ordered a PE backer rod / round sealing tape instead of foam tape and pressed it into the joint. Afterwards, I applied Sikaflex 11FC over it. Is this okay? I later read that you can also use only foam tape without Sikaflex. But why was Sikaflex applied on top previously as well? And is it a problem that I used backer rod (which apparently is not vapor-permeable) instead of foam tape (which presumably is vapor-permeable)? Actually, it shouldn’t matter since Sikaflex seals everything and therefore no diffusion is possible, right?
Thanks for your opinions!
