ᐅ Excavation for Basement: Your Thoughts on the Cubic Meters

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate your assessment on the following matter:

Basement dimensions: 8.16 x 9.99 meters (let’s say 8.20 x 10)
Excavation depth (see section): approximately 3 meters (10 feet)

2D floor plan of the basement with KG label

In addition, the slope situation: I would say the basement extends about 1/3 above the existing ground level
Workspace allowance: 60 cm (2.4 inches)
Slope angle: According to the soil report, I assumed 60° (recommended between 60° and 80°)

All in all, I calculated an excavation volume of approximately 303 m³ (10,700 cubic feet). Are you getting similar numbers? Did I make a mistake somewhere?
I ask because our excavation contractor has quoted a solid 520 m³ (18,350 cubic feet). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to reach him today to ask where this figure comes from.

Either I have made a significant error somewhere (which is why I am asking for your opinion) or there is something wrong with the quote.

Many thanks in advance!

Great, thanks a lot for the comparison 🙂

Our project is very similar:
Cross-section of house with attic, ground floor, and basement as well as roof, terrace, and dimensions

We want to backfill the red area.

EDIT: Wait a moment... does "395m³ of mechanical excavation" already include volume expansion, or is that additional? If it is included, then I’m confused again about our stated 520m³. That just doesn’t add up...

What are the dimensions of the plot? Ours is 28.5 m (94 feet) wide, which corresponds to the bottom row of L-shaped blocks, and 21.5 m (71 feet) deep. I estimate that we can use about 250 cubic meters (330 cubic yards).

The slope is really steep! It’s probably about 1.75 meters (5 ft 9 in), right? Do you think it will work on 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in)? I always understood that the length of the slope should be roughly twice the height. That doesn’t look like it’s the case in the picture. Did you do it yourself?

That’s exactly why we’re using L-shaped concrete blocks, so we don’t lose too much garden space due to the slope.

The plot is approximately 26m (85 feet) wide and 25m (82 feet) long.

There is roughly 1.50m (5 feet) in height that needs to be bridged. The red area is just a quick sketch I made for the picture. This is the direction it should go.

EDIT: Wait a second... does "395m³ (515 cubic yards) of mechanical excavation" already include loosening, or will that be added later? If loosening is included, then I’m back at square one with our stated 520m³ (680 cubic yards). That just doesn’t add up...
Without loosening.

Your price might already be correct. Just the backfilling and compacting costs us 2600€ gross (only for the area up to the terrace). If disposal and landfill fees are added, that could fit. Mechanical excavation is a separate cost for us at 1500€.
