Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our new build and are considering the heating options. The development area has access to a district heating network.

The costs for the house connection and installation amount to 6,000 euros.

Heating costs are broken down as follows:
Basic fee: 99.96 euros/year
Energy price: 9.53 cents/kWh
Metering fee: 11.10 euros/month

Hot water costs are:
Metering fee: 2.08 euros/month
Water: 8.22 euros/m³ (264 gallons)

How would you rate this district heating tariff?
The heating costs seem acceptable, but I’m finding it difficult to assess the hot water charges.

Would you commit to a monopolistic provider? (You can tell I have my doubts from this question.)

At the moment, I’m considering switching from district heating plus underfloor heating plus controlled ventilation to an air-to-water heat pump plus underfloor heating plus controlled ventilation.
What are your thoughts?

Best regards and thank you

Not an easy question to answer.

Roughly estimated, that’s about €600 more per year compared to an air-to-water heat pump, with a variance of ±€200 depending on the house.
So, roughly, over 20 years that amounts to €12,000 in additional costs.

For €18,000 you can get a heat pump, or a ground-source heat pump, or significantly cheaper depending on your own contribution, or considerably more expensive depending on the offer...
There are many variables involved.
