Dear forum community,

I am currently building a condominium with a developer. The apartment is located on the 2nd floor. There are no extensions, garages, projections, or similar features on my side of the multi-family building. There is a balcony facing the garden, moderately visible. Now I need to quickly decide how secure I want the windows to be.

RC2N for the balcony doors is already decided. RC2 is too expensive for me at 700 euros per door (2 doors in total). I am considering having the window installer apply burglary-resistant film afterward.

The main question: How secure should I make the other windows?
RC1 for all windows costs 243 euros.
RC2N for all windows costs 659 euros.

What would the experts recommend here? Is RC1 necessary, or is standard security (in this case one mushroom head lock) sufficient? Does RC2N still make sense on this floor? Or is RC2N something I should take anyway given the moderate additional cost?

Thanks and best regards

What is the burglary pressure like in your area? At our previous home, a bit more security was definitely necessary. In other places, the risk of break-ins is low. Also, check with your insurance provider to see if this affects your premium.
Security and the feeling of security are two completely different things, and both should be taken seriously.
Some people are scared in a dark forest but feel comfortable in a lively sports crowd. That says a lot about the feeling of security. Unfortunately, insecurity often increases as actual security improves. People get used to a certain standard.

rick2018: It’s not a motorized lock, just two additional self-locking bolts at the top and bottom of the door. For that, 1,345 euros is quite a lot of money, isn’t it?

hampshire: The apartment is located right in the Ruhr area. So I would assume the risk of break-ins is rather high, right?

Then it is ambitious if it is only the additional cost for the locking mechanism.

What would you consider more appropriate there? Just to have a rough idea of the size.

It always depends on the system and the door. Since a developer is involved, you will probably have to bite the bullet if you want that.
It will likely cost up to around 500€ net for the other/additional locking mechanism.

Yes, around €500 for an automatic lock is realistic.
