ᐅ Mistakes When Installing Laminate Flooring

Three months ago, I installed click laminate flooring for the first time. The visual result turned out great, but I made a mistake by not paying attention to the subfloor. The laminate is laid over an old plank floor, which is uneven in two or three spots. I simply installed the laminate panels on top 🙁 (yes, I know, that was a foolish move). Now, the joints in those areas are starting to open up a bit. I’m considering removing the laminate and planing the old plank floor smooth. Then, I would close the gaps that have opened with some adhesive. That should work, right? Before I get started, I’d like to ask the experts here for their opinion. What do you think?

I also knew that laminate flooring cannot be installed directly over the floorboards. So all the work was in vain, and now it has to be reinstalled. But this time on a proper subfloor.

Mistakes are made to be learned from. No one is born a skilled tradesperson, that’s just how it is. Most of us have made mistakes, myself included. I’ve also installed laminate flooring and simply forgot the vapor barrier. I only realized it when I was almost finished.

Of course, no one is immune to mistakes. It just happens. The issue with the vapor barrier is, of course, frustrating and means the entire laminate flooring will have to be removed. I would not skip a vapor barrier on the ground floor. The basement is often not heated and moisture can accumulate there.
