Hello,

Our tile installer brought up the topic of grout material. He said he could also apply and recommend epoxy grout in wet areas.

What has been your experience with this?
Is there usually an additional cost?

Best regards,
Barossi

Yes. EP is expensive. But absolutely! Waterproof and solid, even vapor-tight. Once cured, it is safe for health, but it needs to be handled carefully before that, which is what he wants to do. It becomes very, very hard and has very limited elasticity, adheres to everything like crazy. I guess the tile will break before a joint cracks.

Why is he suggesting that to you? It is done to seal something. I personally grouted our kitchen countertop with epoxy: it was a tough job, sticky and tedious. And very expensive... we are definitely in the heavy-duty category *laughs. For about 3 square meters (32 square feet), we paid roughly 500 DM back in 1999! That probably isn’t any cheaper nowadays.

Why not? I expect him to at least ask me.....

So, should I go ahead or not?

Overdressed. Unsuitable as an expansion joint. Unnecessary as a joint between tiles instead of a cement-based product.
