Hello everyone,
I recently bought several IKEA KALLAX shelves and plan to enhance the inserts to make the storage space more functional and visually appealing. I am especially interested in the possibilities to improve the inserts – both plastic bins and wooden inserts – through simple but effective modifications. I am thinking of better organization solutions, visual upgrades such as decals or paint, as well as practical redesigns like adding compartments or using different materials. Does anyone have experience or creative ideas on how to upgrade KALLAX inserts in a useful and sustainable way without it becoming too expensive or complicated? Tips on tools, materials, and techniques would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your support!

…what options there are to improve the inserts – both plastic boxes and wooden inserts – through simple but effective modifications. It’s awesome that you want to upgrade your KALLAX! 🙂 I recently used fabric covers for my bins and attached them with Velcro strips, so I can remove or swap them anytime – super flexible! I also installed small drawers made from lightweight wood inside. It’s not much work and looks great. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to share a few more tips to make it perfect!

Used fabrics as covers for my boxes and worked with hook-and-loop fastenersThat sounds like a great project – it shows how a little fun and creativity can go a long way! 😉 To add to that: if you have wooden inserts that seem a bit plain, you can decorate them nicely with chalk paint or wood stain – it creates a lovely vintage look. I also find it useful to attach magnetic strips on the inside to keep small items like keys or metal clips within easy reach. And as a tip: repurpose cable holders or cable ties to organize small compartments effectively. It makes the space both cozy and tidy at the same time.
