ᐅ Electrical Planning – How Many Outlets Are Enough?

Hi, we had our electrical consultation on Friday to discuss where everything should be installed.

Attached is a plan showing how we planned it with the electrician. Almost all our wishes were included; there were hardly any suggestions for improvement.

In the pictures, the power outlets are marked in orange.

For internet/telephone, we only have 2 lines. He wanted to charge 108€ per outlet for more lines, so we are now doing it ourselves, meaning there will be an internet connection in every room.

Living room: 4-2-4 power outlets plus TV, and 2 plus another 2 outlets.

Hallway: 1 outlet at the front and at the back, plus a telephone connection.

Utility room: besides the appliances themselves, for washing machine and dryer there are 2 individual outlets.

Guest WC: 1 outlet.

Home office: 3 power outlets plus telephone and TV, and 2 times 1 outlet.

Upstairs:

Children’s rooms: 3 outlets plus TV and 2 times 2 outlets.

Dressing room: 2 individual outlets in the middle at the top (for Ikea Pax light). Also, the light switch for the bedroom is in the dressing room... is that a good setup? (Red dot-arrow)

Bedroom: 3 outlets plus TV, and next to the bed, 3 outlets on each side (would it be better to have these lower or slightly higher so they are above the bedside table? Since baby monitors, phones, etc. are plugged in daily.)

Storage room: 2 individual outlets.

Bathroom: 2 outlets on the left side of the vanity wall. Additionally, a ceiling light in front of the shower. Are there any suggestions for improvement here? Should one outlet be left there with a spotlight that shines into the shower, or use that one outlet to install LED spots in the ceiling?

Hallway at the back: 1 outlet.

So, now the pictures follow, which hopefully are clear.

I would appreciate your feedback and suggestions for improvements.

The energy transition has long been mandated by the government, with higher-level plans set for 2030, 2050, and beyond. Even if we proceed three times more slowly, it will still happen well before all depletable energy resources run out. So, in the end, it really comes down to personal costs. And I consider 1.78 EUR per device per year worth it.

I also find this scaremongering problematic. If the temperature rises by 1.5 degrees Celsius (34.7°F), the world won't end, and if we don't change everything immediately today, all the oil, gas, and coal in the world won’t suddenly disappear tomorrow. Turning off standby mode will not save us all.

And please start with giving up meat and car use before trying to save the world by turning off standby...

Where is the router planned to be installed? In the utility room or the office? Has a power outlet already been reserved for it?

If the two planned telephone outlets are going to be used, the router needs to be placed in the utility room. Nowadays, a fixed-line socket for VoIP is connected at the router, not at the main connection point. If DECT is used, you don’t need those outlets. But if they are to be installed, please make sure they use CAT cables and RJ45 sockets, not 2x2 cables.

Don’t you have someone in your circle of acquaintances knowledgeable about network wiring including telephony, with whom you can calmly review the plan once more?

Make sure that in the kitchen at least two outlets for ovens (even if only one is currently planned) and one outlet for the dishwasher are separately protected. Additionally, include the connection for the cooktop.

What benefits do you expect from extra circuit protection for lights and outlets in each room?

It would be practical to have all outlets intended for decorative purposes (e.g., in the windows) grouped on a single circuit that can be equipped with a timer switch. This way, the holiday lighting can be turned on and off centrally at the right time.

Do you want to hear a thank you now? Thank you!
Your efforts have culminated in the EU directive that mandates reducing standby power to a minimum. This is a major success.
However, it would be pointless now to try to optimize the very last decimal place because it simply isn’t worth it. There are other areas where smaller changes lead to significantly higher savings.

Regarding the generational criticism, it’s hard for me to keep quiet, but I’ll give you a hint: Four schoolmates barely turned 20 or didn’t reach it. Three experienced liberal upbringing regarding drugs (you can guess the parents’ generation), one from Afghanistan.
We have simply identified different priorities as important.
