Good evening,

This is my first post here, so hello again!
I have bought an older house that needs renovation.
The electrical wiring is old and needs to be completely replaced.
I know an electrician who comes from abroad; he is very skilled and owns an electrical company there. Unfortunately, he has no experience with the paperwork involved here in Germany. That’s why I would like to ask you how the process usually works.

I thought—just my assumption—that the electrician can install the wiring, but afterwards a certified master electrician needs to inspect the installation and sign off on the approval. Is that correct, or is it more complicated? 🙂

Could you please explain the typical procedure, what to watch out for, and what kind of costs I can expect?

Best regards,

If you find another electrician who takes responsibility for it.

So a qualified electrician might be able to sign off on an inspection with their own name. He will probably want to see the work process (or at least ensure that none of the cables are concealed within the walls during the inspection).
As far as I understand, the electrician takes full responsibility for the wiring.

Do you electricians often get requests just for inspections?
How much should such an inspection typically cost?

I know of two cases where the electrician each charged 200 euros for this.

One electrician wanted to conduct two inspections and one measurement. Once during the cable installation and once on the completed distribution board. He planned to do the measurement together with the distribution board inspection.

The other electrician requested a comprehensive measurement report for all cables. He offered this for 800–900 euros if the client was unable to provide it themselves.

Ok, thank you for your answers. Now I know a bit more.

I’m asking again in this topic.
What about water/sewer pipes and oil heating systems?
Does someone also have to legally approve the work here, or do such regulations not apply?

Water supply and wastewater systems are generally not officially inspected or approved. There is no legal requirement for a certified professional to sign off on them. However, only a qualified company should work on water pipes, although this is rarely checked. You can install an oil heating system yourself if you want. However, the oil tank and piping are typically not allowed to be installed by non-professionals. If something goes wrong and oil leaks or seeps into the ground, you could quickly face severe financial consequences.
