Jobartosz22 Jun 2015 18:37I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen and would like to know the most effective way to care for the cabinet fronts while protecting their appearance, so they continue to look good even after extended use. The surfaces seem quite delicate, especially with frequent exposure to moisture, grease, and heat in the kitchen. I am particularly interested in specific care products, cleaning methods, or protective techniques that are compatible with the material—after all, nothing should be damaged or discolored. Does anyone have long-term experience with particular cleaners, protective coatings, or perhaps home remedies? What approaches have proven effective in preventing scratches, discoloration, or fading of the Metod fronts? Tips on regular cleaning and long-term protection are also welcome.
For the care of IKEA Metod kitchen fronts, I recommend the following procedures:
- Clean only with mild, non-abrasive cleaning agents (e.g., pH-neutral all-purpose cleaners or soapy water)
- Use a damp, soft cloth to avoid scratches
- Avoid aggressive chemicals such as bleach or solvents, as they can damage the surface
- For greasy stains, clean gently, possibly with dish soap water, and then wipe with clean water
- Remove dust regularly to prevent fine scratches caused by particles
Regular maintenance with special care oils or waxes can provide visual protection if recommended by the manufacturer. However, these are usually not directly necessary for Metod kitchen fronts, as they are mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard. Scratches cannot usually be completely avoided, so I recommend handling with care, especially with sharp objects. It is important to always test cleaning agents on an inconspicuous area first.

The kitchen fronts of the IKEA Metod series are mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard or painted MDF fronts. This means:
- Melamine coating is resistant to moisture but can be prone to scratches if handled improperly.
- Painted fronts should only be cleaned with soft cloths to avoid damaging the paint.
Here are some care tips:
- Immediate removal of greasy stains is important to prevent discoloration.
- Mild, alkaline-neutral cleaners are suitable for cleaning.
- Wax-based polishes should only be used if explicitly recommended for the front type.
- For long-lasting protection, additional doors made of acrylic or glass can be retrofitted.
This is crucial. Some common household cleaners contain ammonia or alcohol, which can actually dull the coating.

My Metod fronts still look great after two years because I’m really meticulous about care.
- Never scrub aggressively, or you’ll get scratches galore.
- Dish soap water and a soft microfiber cloth are my best friends.
- Occasionally, a bit of laminate furniture polish doesn’t hurt; it creates a nice protective layer.
- Warning: Don’t use wax on painted fronts – it causes stains.
True, it looks super sleek and offers excellent protection against dirt and scratches. It does cost extra but is really worth it!

I love my Metod kitchen! Maintaining it isn’t difficult if you do it right:
- Wipe it down once every day to prevent stains from setting in.
- I use a mild cleaner from the hardware store, which I dilute slightly.
- It is also important not to use microfiber-based cleaning products that contain harsh chemicals.
I can also recommend some personal tests with olive oil— but use it very sparingly, or it will get sticky. For protecting the surface, regular cleaning and careful handling help most!
