Hello, we are currently planning a modern two-story city villa with a hip roof. The ridge height will be 9.06 meters (29.7 feet).
The roof pitch is 25 degrees, and currently a roof overhang of 50 cm (20 inches) is planned.
I’m not sure if a 50 cm (20 inch) roof overhang will look good, but the architect said it is definitely sufficient. She thinks larger overhangs tend to make the house look like a ski chalet in a winter resort...
What do you think is optimal? I find it quite difficult to imagine from the drawings, and when looking at finished houses, I’m always unsure which ones actually have a 50 cm (20 inch) overhang.
Thanks in advance for your opinions!

100 cm (40 inches) may be a common sight in Lower Bavaria, but it looks completely unfamiliar in central and northern Germany.

We have west or southwest exposure in summer and mostly south in winter.
In a new development area, nowadays everything is allowed that the zoning plan permits. At the moment, anthracite-colored windows are very trendy...

In Germany, the weather-facing side is usually the west, period.
By the way, I said it looks visually odd because many people here simply don’t build that way. Of course, this is subjective, but opinions are like that.

Bieber081529 Mar 2016 12:02If cost is a factor, I would keep it at 50cm (20 inches). Larger roof overhangs are more expensive but, in my opinion, do not provide a significant additional benefit in the case discussed here ("urban villa").
