ᐅ Excavation work: Is a contract required in addition to the signed quote?

Prompted by another thread, I have a question again:

We have found an earthworks contractor who will carry out the necessary work for us in February/March next year. He sent us a quote, which we signed after a phone call and returned to him with the note "Offer accepted/Order placed."

Is this sufficient, or should we expect that he will simply demand thousands of euros more from us in February/March?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

If you invest properly in advance, this can easily be compensated. 😉

Can we keep this a bit more professional?
Of course, a contractor must factor in supplier price increases. That’s how business works. What the stair builder does is exactly what they are obligated to deliver. However, it is considered bad practice to pass every supplier price increase directly on to the uninformed customer.

It was still by far cheaper than the subcontractor from the general contractor and remained less expensive than three other stair builders we contacted.

On top of that, he was also the friendliest and possibly even the most competent – at least the one with the greatest patience.

@Pinkiponk Yes, that is sufficient. Provided you did not try to renegotiate during the phone consultation.
We did not renegotiate.

Is this a unit price quote? Then, of course, there may be significant quantity deviations during execution resulting in a new final price, which can go either way.
Some items are listed as "if required" under unit price.

Is it possible to reasonably predict whether the electrical planning items will need to be carried out?

Is the quote not a fixed price?

My husband has reviewed each item and discussed any potential additional costs. It still seems reasonable to him. Also, out of more than 10 earthworks contractors, only 4 responded, with one stating they have "no available capacity." So unfortunately, we don’t really have much choice.

If you build in some extra allowance from the start, you can easily make up for it. 😉
Of course, you can always assume the worst. This mindset is toxic because over time it causes people to completely lose trust in each other, feel constantly wronged, and eventually start cheating themselves.
