ᐅ Excavation work. How do you calculate gravel and soil excavation?

Hello everyone,

I have received a few quotes from earthmoving contractors, but each calculates the amount of gravel and soil excavation differently. :-\
Calculations from the contractors (according to their quotes):
Gravel: 150–250 tons
Soil excavation: 250–400 tons

What do you think? How many tons of gravel and soil excavation should I expect?
- Slope location about 1.5m (5 feet)
- House dimensions 10x10m (33x33 ft). (+2x2m (6.5x6.5 ft) for scaffolding?)

- According to the soil report:

-> Recommended foundation cushion height: > 0.65m (2 ft) cushion overlap: 0.5m (1.6 ft)
-> Soil class 3–5.
-> .. do you need more information from the soil report for a rough calculation of gravel and soil excavation? Please let me know.

- Double garage on strip foundations 6x9m (20x30 ft)
- Garage driveway: 6x6m (20x20 ft)
- Terrace: 10x3m (33x10 ft)

How do you generally calculate here for a house, terrace, garage, driveway?
House or building permit / planning permission: Width x Length (+ 2m (6.5 feet) scaffolding) x cushion height = tons * compaction factor?
12 x 12 x 0.65 = 93.6 m² (1,007.5 ft²) x 3 compaction = 280 tons?

@Osnabruecker
Thank you, Osnabruecker.
I just read your post about the "volume." So, would the volume you mentioned be similar to what I meant with the factor in my previous post?
Basically, theoretically:
Width x Length x Cushion height x Volume = Tons of gravel or excavated soil (depending on soil moisture).
Theoretical, right, or am I missing something here?

How do I determine the correct bedding thickness for a terrace, garage, and driveway?

Volume = m3
You are looking for the term "density," t/m3.
You can also search on Google to see what is suggested there. In the "other" forum, 2.2 tons/m3 is recommended. I would suggest more like 1.8. It depends on the material, of course.

Based on the professional recommendations of your surveyor, planner, or landscape gardener.

It depends on your ground conditions. The more frost-susceptible the soil, the deeper the bedding needs to be. The poorer the water drainage, the deeper it should be. And the heavier the load (driveway!), the deeper the bedding must be.
