I have a small request. We already have two quotes for laying utility lines (the connections are all already on the plot) up to the not yet built house, creating a construction access road, and excavating for a garage. However, the utility lines would have to be installed along the left property boundary and the construction access road on the right (due to the future driveway to the house), so there is no way to avoid excavator work here. The installation route for the utility lines is about 50m (55 yards), and the construction road is about 25m (27 yards). In addition, there is the excavation for the garage (no slab) measuring 6m by 9m (20 ft by 30 ft).
The quotes are each around 40,000 euros. I find this somewhat expensive...
My question is, could a layperson possibly do this themselves? I don’t know if I'm underestimating it, but for the utility lines, you basically just have to dig a trench, lay in the conduits plus the drainage pipe, fill it up again with sand and gravel, and then cover it with the excavated soil; the slope is already included for us since it’s a slightly sloping site. The construction road would be similar—removing soil and filling with gravel. Then there’s the garage excavation as well 🙂
My possible solutions would be:
How would you proceed to save some money here?
Thank you very much for your help!

My possible solutions would be:
- renting an excavator myself and finding out how to do it properly. The problem: I can’t operate an excavator yet and don’t really know how everything should be done.
- renting an excavator with an operator
- possibly obtaining further quotes
How would you proceed to save some money here?

What will happen to the excavated soil? Regarding the construction access road—does that already include gravel? A 25m (82 feet) access road and excavation for the garage are not small quantities.
