ᐅ Earth auger for pier foundations – what diameter is recommended?

We want to create pier foundations for a log fence, a chain-link fence, and a greenhouse. However, I don’t want to dig all of them out by hand with a spade, and renting a motor-driven earth auger is too expensive. Therefore, I’m considering using a manual auger. What size would be sufficient here? Is a 20cm (8 inches) diameter enough? There is a version from Fiskars that I’m somewhat interested in. Otherwise, I also have 25cm (10 inches) and 30cm (12 inches) augers from other manufacturers in my shopping cart. What do you recommend?

Also, should I insert PVC pipes into the holes, or is it better to pour the concrete directly into the soil?

For a handful of holes, a manual post hole digger is enough. For more holes, especially if they need to be deep and not wide in diameter, doing it by hand is tough. And if you want to fence an entire property, an electric auger definitely makes sense. As mentioned before, buy one, use it, and then sell it again on classifieds. Alternatively, you can just get a device like that from classifieds right away.

Alternatively, some people also offer rental of these devices on classifieds. However, for a large fencing project lasting several weeks, renting is not really a solution—more like a “let’s finish this today” kind of deal.

I was very satisfied with the manual earth auger (20cm) (8 inches). If there are no obstacles, you can drill a hole in sandy soil within a few minutes. If something is in the way, you’ll need to clear it with a pickaxe or similar tool. The holes you get are much narrower than with a spade but are usually sufficient for tasks like installing a fence. Enlarging the hole is not a problem—you can make it bigger with a spade and then use the earth auger to remove the soil from the hole.

Thank you very much for all the opinions and reports!

We want to build about 50-80 meters (approximately 160-260 feet) of fencing (not yet finalized), so that’s quite a bit. I really prefer not to do that with a manual digging spade.

Since there is no earth auger available for rent nearby, I am considering buying a gasoline-powered one and renting it out myself after finishing the job. A manual post hole digger already costs me about a quarter of the price of the machine and requires more time.

The soil here is rather clayey, and further down there is even some construction debris in places. I expect the machine will save me a lot of time and effort, and if a 20 cm (8 inch) diameter is sufficient, that’s fine.

If you buy a good one, I would probably even buy it from you afterwards *g*

What does "good" mean? It will probably be the Attika ELB 52. That should be sufficient for my needs.

Yes, I have seen that one as well. However, I have no experience with the devices. The jumps to the next price range are quite significant.
