ᐅ DWG File for 3D Home Design – Looking for Software

Hello,

I received the DWG file with our floor plans from my architect and would now like to import it into a program to create a suitable 3D model. There are several free options available, but so far I haven’t found one that allows me to import the DWG file and then generate the corresponding 3D model.

The software needs to be compatible with a Mac.

Has anyone here dealt with this topic before?

Regards,

You can register with Autodesk and use the free online viewer. As far as I know, there is currently no free viewer available for Mac. There is one for iPhone or iPad Pro.

Try DraftSight. In my opinion, it is the best free alternative to AutoCAD. It is also designed similarly to AutoCAD. I used it to draw my electrical installation plans. I believe it is provided by the creators of SolidWorks (a competitor to Autodesk AutoCAD). If the DWG file contains 3D information, you can also load it with DraftSight.

Please avoid downloading a complicated AutoCAD trial version. That is not necessary with DraftSight.

Well, I don't think DraftSight is free..?

Oh no. It seems they have changed it. Apparently, it’s only free until the end of the year now. Download the 30-day version (link see PM). I can extend it for another 30 days after the initial period by entering my email address again. I have been using the program for free for 5 years now.

You don’t have 100 posts yet. Private messaging is not possible. Google for DraftSight 30-day license.

That also probably won’t be possible anymore from 12/31/2019 (according to their website).
So, SweetHome3D is still the only option :-/

So:
1. Convert DWG to OBJ (architect, trial version of other software, possibly Blender)
2. Import OBJ into SweetHome3D
3. Live with SH3D...
