Hi everyone,

Decorations are nice and all, but my roommate is really overdoing it. I live in a shared apartment with four people, and about six months ago a new girl joined us. Gradually, the decorative items in our shared living room have been increasing more and more.

I admit, the decor was very minimal before, and sticking used beer labels on the wall wasn’t to everyone’s taste. But you can definitely go too far, and now there’s hardly a spot left without some little bottle with a plastic flower or something similar on it. Don’t get me wrong, it does look better than before and she has good taste, but whoever is in charge of cleaning spends ages dusting all those things. It really doesn’t have to be like that – keyword: healthy balance!!

Just had to get that off my chest. Thanks

Hello post,

you really hit the nail on the head. Our whole house is also filled with that kind of stuff. And where there’s no more space, one is simply created. Quote: “I could just put away my old swimming trophies, they’re just dust collectors anyway!” – Seriously? I usually go along with a lot of things, and when it comes to decoration, I’m usually not the one to decide.

But not this time. !!!The trophies are still here and will stay exactly where they are – come what may!!!

Somehow you have to make an apartment – especially a shared flat that used to be all about testosterone – feel cozy!

My experience with the necessary steps so far:
1. Do a big cleaning
2. Discuss wall colors (and possibly change them)
3. Final touches – the (here much-feared) decorating

And – guys, admit it: you feel more comfortable when it doesn’t look quite so spartan!

And about cleaning issues: As if the male flatmates would clean thoroughly… *ahem* 😉
