Hello everyone, I recently got a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and have already noticed that the smooth surfaces and open compartments collect a lot of dust. My question is: What effective methods do you know to keep the KALLAX unit as dust-free as possible without having to clean it constantly with a lot of effort? I’m also interested in sustainable cleaning products or helpful little tips for daily maintenance. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Since the shelf is used openly and the white surfaces show dust clearly, I would recommend the following:

1. Brief daily wiping with an anti-static microfiber cloth to reduce dust buildup.
2. Weekly damp cleaning with a mild, pH-neutral detergent that does not damage the surface.
3. Avoid waxes or oil-based products on melamine, as they can leave residues.

Additionally, you can use boxes or fabric liners in the compartments. These not only protect against dust but also dampen vibrations and help keep things organized.

It’s interesting how often people simply criticize the plain surface without considering that the design might aim for openness and lightness. Dust inevitably becomes an issue in such cases.

Use breathable dust covers or fabric boxes for frequently used compartments.

However, this leads to a point: covering everything causes much of the original look to be lost. Maybe it would be better to change how we deal with dust—by regular cleaning—instead of adding more covers or even using chemical anti-static agents.

Another idea is to pay attention to the indoor climate—higher humidity can reduce dust. What do you think about that?

I simply use sturdy fabric storage bins in the compartments. They are washable and effectively prevent dust from settling on the shelves. Just take the bin out, wipe it down or wash it, and you’re done.
