micric3Hello forum,
We had an A2YL2Y 6X2X0.6 TR telecommunications cable supplied in advance by the electrician for the Telekom DSL connection. Now I am receiving different feedback.
My questions:
1) Is this the correct cable for a DSL connection, the type Telekom would install?
2) Can this cable be used for a video intercom/doorbell system?
Good luck

1) Where exactly is the telecommunications cable supposed to run, and what is it intended to connect? From the distribution cabinet to your house? Since it is an underground cable...
2) If the system supports two-wire connections, you can basically use any cable with two wires. Otherwise, it won’t work. Even 100 Mbit LAN is unlikely to work with it.
A question in return: How did you decide on such a cable? The “DSL connection” usually refers to the network termination point inside the building, and from there you either use an adapter from TAE to RJ45 for the modem or router, or you convert it directly to Cat/RJ45. You now have a nice underground cable, but for what purpose? You should probably have thought about what you wanted to do with it before purchasing.

The cable is supposed to run 50m (165 feet) from the property boundary into the house. (Construction has not started yet, but the cable is already buried underground.)
The DSL issue was caused by the electrician, who was trying to coordinate with the telecom provider. (I wasn’t aware of that.)
So, does this mean I can at least power a video doorbell system with it without an additional power supply line?

Why not check with the telecom provider if this is even acceptable for them? I would strongly recommend clarifying this first. Usually, as a preliminary step, you only install an empty conduit according to the network operator’s specifications (Telecom DN75 for multi-utility entry).
Regarding the video intercom system: it’s hard to say in general, but the tendency is no. The question is simply too broad. It might be possible to find a system that works with this setup if you search thoroughly. All the two-wire systems I’ve encountered so far required power at the outdoor station. Can you run a Cat cable out there? If so, you could at least use PoE systems, which offer a much wider selection of quality options. In most cases, two-wire systems and good video quality do not go hand in hand.

Instead of asking here about the cable, you should contact the telecommunications provider directly to clarify the exact specifications. It’s best to get this in writing so that everyone knows what was agreed upon even in the future.
Run the cable to the doorbell inside a conduit to allow for easy replacement or to pull through a second cable if needed.

I asked in an electrician forum and also consulted with local electricians; the cable is sufficient for an intercom system with audio, video, and door opener. I will additionally install a separate Cat7 cable as an option for another video system (PoE with connection to smart home or similar). Telekom charges a flat fee of 800 EUR anyway, so they might as well do the digging and cable installation themselves.
