Hello,

Briefly:
A landscaping contractor recently told me that according to current regulations, I am not allowed to use gravel for the driveway. This surprises me, as he is the only one with this opinion so far.

In detail:
The discussion about using gravel or sand for paved surfaces has occurred before.
The main points from most discussions I found were:
- Gravel is more expensive
- Gravel results in fewer or no ants and less or no weeds

My father-in-law has two terraces. The older one uses sand, the newer one gravel. He is significantly more satisfied with the gravel.
I am therefore willing to choose gravel.

I requested several quotes for paving. All but one offer a bedding layer of crushed stone / decorative gravel with a 0/8 mm (0/0.3 inches) grain size.
Of course, there is a DIN 18318 standard that allows a 0/8 mm (0/0.3 inches) grain size for paved surfaces that are not heavily loaded (i.e., pedestrian access only).

Now, one landscaping contractor offered sand and when I asked about the surcharge for gravel, he said it was price-neutral for him but that only sand is allowed in areas driven on by cars. This surprises me because no other provider seems to consider this.

Of course, there are many DIN standards and differing opinions on everything. While one landscaping contractor says that’s nonsense or only applies to commercial areas, another says they will do it as I want but recommend a certain approach.

Specific question:
So my question is: Does anyone know about this issue or have personal experience/research?

Thank you.

I have also received the following feedback regarding which guideline is being violated here:

"ZTV Wegebau and the ATV sections of VOB Part C. Although with a slight correction to the previous statement: Crushed hard rock is permitted under PWK load. However, in some regions, limestone gravel is mostly used for paving, and it tends to break down. The clear recommendation is to use sand 0-8 as bedding material."

Limestone does indeed sound less durable. I will review the other offers accordingly.
