Dear Home Building Forum,
my partner and I strongly disagree about the layout of our walk-in closet. The original floor plan does not include a door to the bathroom. My partner really wants to add an entrance to the bathroom, but I am concerned that this will make it difficult to fit enough wardrobes. What are your opinions? Should we install the door or leave it out?
Best regards, Carolin

It is also interesting that the expensive balcony is assigned to the guest room. I agree that the floor plan has clear potential for improvement ...

It’s not about the furnishing app, but the orange highlighted area

And

So, not just the door, but the entire wall.

I agree.
And Katja has already “furnished” it, so all that’s left is to remove the wall to the hallway and add a door to the bedroom.

The orange area is open, which allows light into the hallway upstairs. We don’t like the idea of moving the dressing area into the hallway. Still, thank you very much for the suggestion. Placing the bed under the window will also be difficult, since our bed is quite tall and wouldn’t work well with the window sill height. I’m not too concerned about the small gap between the bed and the wall.

The guest room will become an office. The balcony could certainly be omitted, but it does give the house a special charm.

For me, the house was designed from the outside inward: meaning for the neighbors rather than functional practicality. There is a significant need for optimization.

A 50cm (20 inch) passage next to the bed... seriously? A walk-in closet that offers hardly any storage space? Two expensive bumps that are then used for a walk-in closet and a guest room?

Well, your comment about the balcony only confirms my impression—you are planning for the neighbors instead of for YOURSELVES.

What exactly is supposed to allow light into this strange niche at the top?

If you place a proper wardrobe on the left side here:

which then continues around the corner into a sideboard at the bottom side, the hallway would look good. Bedding and towels could also be stored more conveniently in the hallway area instead of your bedroom, and the hallway would actually get some light.

Has construction already started? In the bedroom, you could consider making the window on the right side narrower—or even removing it—and instead install a wider window on the bottom side.

With a 200cm (79 inches) wide mattress, you’re left with just about 50cm (20 inches) on each side with a box spring bed (310cm (122 inches) is the structural dimension). Once you add a bed frame, it really becomes tight. Changing the bedding there won’t be very comfortable.

Realistically, no light will reach there given the size.
Sorry, but this is a design flaw; the hallway will be dark.

Wrong approach: If you want the balcony because you like it better that way – fine. You pay – you decide.
But if you already invest in something like that, then make proper use of it and don’t sacrifice it for an office that won’t benefit from it.

Regarding the distance between bed and wall: Try laying it out with cardboard on the floor; you’ll see how incredibly tight it really is...
