Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me how a layperson can best measure the slope of a drainage system? We have four drainage inspection chambers around the house. I would like to calculate the position (the slope) of the drainage through these. What options do I have? I once attended a survey where they used a device mainly consisting of long tubes filled with liquid. I suspect this system measured based on pressure differences (possibly some kind of water level). Does anyone know what that might have been? Maybe such a device can also be rented? Another option would be to use a leveling instrument. I’m a bit worried about making mistakes with the measurements this way. I need a reliable method. Any ideas?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Accurate to one centimeter. Is that precise enough according to your question?
Yes. One centimeter is achievable without much effort, but it can be challenging for an untrained layperson. At a depth of 3m-4m (10-13 feet), the question also arises which point inside the shaft you want to measure in terms of height (what does the bottom of the shaft look like?) and how and with what you plan to take the measurement.

If the heights are disputed, this can only be done by a surveyor, most likely a publicly authorized one. Wait for their results first. If you have doubts, you can always hire another firm you trust. I don’t think it would cost more than 300 euros.

Are these essentially the two options I have for surveying (leveling instrument and water level)?
If you really want to try it yourself: a laser level could also be an option. However, the ones you get at hardware stores usually come with very poor tripods that wobble so much you won’t be able to achieve one-centimeter accuracy.

We already had two experts on site who measured the drainage.
What kind of specialists were they (which professional field)? What exactly did their measuring setup look like? You can’t measure the bottom of the shaft with a water level.
