Hello everyone,

I want to build a welded wire fence around part of the garden. Since I have a small natural stone wall at the boundary, I plan to position the fence posts behind it. Now my main question:

I have a 20cm (8 inch) earth auger, but I keep reading that for the foundation you definitely need a 30cm (12 inch) hole. I would like to hear your opinions on this.

Would a 20cm (8 inch) foundation be sufficient? The fence is 123cm (48 inches) high.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

The fence will probably stay in place for now. The 30cm (12 inches) foundation is more durable. In my opinion, the few extra hours of work are worth it.

Get yourself a post hole digger to quickly dig the right holes. For a welded wire fence about 40cm (16 inches) high, we dug holes approximately 40cm (16 inches) wide. That definitely holds. Neighbors dug 20cm (8 inches) wide holes and just poured some ready-mix concrete in; their fence wobbles like a wet noodle.

All right, thank you all, then it will be 30cm (12 inches). It was worth a try!

Hello again everyone. I wanted to start digging the hole, but I have now realized that part of the garden is on compacted recycled material. I can’t break through it with either a shovel or a manual earth auger. Now my question is whether I need an excavator, or if maybe a gasoline-powered earth auger (two-person version) could manage it.

Maybe you have some ideas.

Pickaxe and give it to him.
