We are planning a double garage with a residential extension above. In your opinion, what dimensions should the double garage have based on your experience? What is the ideal size for a double garage? Is a garage size of 6 x 6 meters (20 x 20 feet) too small?

You don’t always drive the same cars, after all.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

The garage width measurement is fine. We fit two large station wagons in our garage at 5.6 meters (18 feet 4 inches) and still have plenty of space to open the doors on both cars.
The garage depth is also sufficient, but aside from the cars, there isn’t much room left for anything else. You should be aware of that. Our garage measures 5.6 x 9 meters (18 feet 4 inches x 29 feet 6 inches), and we’re really glad to have the extra space in the garage.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, having more space would definitely be great, but we have planned our terrace behind the garage, and it would become smaller otherwise. Maybe we will add a garden shed for the lawn mower and other tools, so they don’t have to be stored in the garage as well.

Hello,

This year, we poured the concrete slab for a friend. The size is 6.5x7.6m (21.3x24.9 ft), so approximately 50m² (540 sq ft), which does not require a building permit / planning permission in the state of BRB.

We parked both of his cars side by side on the slab, opened one door on each car (for easy access), and then added 30cm (12 inches) on each side for the walls. I have to say, with these dimensions, the double garage is perfect—there is still enough space at the back for a workbench and other things.
