Hello everyone,
I am currently working on adding doors to an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit to use it as a small cabinet. During this process, I came across the topic of door hinges, which turned out to be more complicated than expected. My main question is: Are there any recommendations on how the doors on the KALLAX unit should be hinged?
I should mention that the unit is placed in a corner, and I want to minimize space loss caused by the doors swinging open. Additionally, it is important to me that the opening angle is wide enough to easily access the contents—without the doors protruding too far.
Does anyone know of sturdy and proven solutions, such as hinges or special door fittings, that work well with the KALLAX shelving unit? I am especially interested in options that are easy to install and remain stable over time, so the doors don’t end up hanging crooked.
I look forward to tips, experiences, or links to suitable products!
Thank you in advance!

Are there any recommendations on how the doors should be hinged on the KALLAX shelf?Basically, I recommend concealed, durable hinges, such as those from hardware suppliers like Blum or Häfele. For KALLAX, folding hinges with soft-close damping work particularly well, allowing the door panel to close smoothly and quietly.
Since your shelf is placed in a corner, the door hinge should open inward so the doors do not extend into the room. If space is limited, folding doors are also worth considering, though installation is more complex and not every door is suitable for this.
Another tip: make sure the doors are not too heavy, especially if you’re not using continuous metal frames. Lightweight panels with a stable frame can reduce stress on the hinges and extend their service life.
If you want, I can provide specific links, but there are many online platforms offering similar products.

For KALLAX, folding hinges with damping are especially suitableAdditionally, I would like to offer a short mini-tutorial:
1. Door material choice: light or heavy? Most people choose lightweight doors (e.g., MDF with veneer) because they put less strain on the hinges.
2. Types of hinges: There are simple surface-mounted or inset hinges. For KALLAX, inset hinges are usually better because they sit flush and look cleaner.
3. Installation: Think carefully about where to place the hinges. Usually, two per door are sufficient for KALLAX dimensions.
4. Opening direction: Since you mentioned a corner, I recommend an inward-opening hinge. This prevents the doors from protruding too far into the room.
5. Door stop with integrated damper: This prevents rattling and extends the lifespan of the mechanism.
6. Adjustment: Most hinges allow fine-tuning with a small screw in case the door gets misaligned.
Common mistakes:
- Choosing doors that are too heavy
- Incorrect hinge placement
- Not planning for adjustment options
If you want, I can gladly provide some sources for purchasing.

As a complement, I’d like to offer a brief "mini-tutorial"This is brilliant! 🙂
I fitted my own KALLAX units with doors and can definitely confirm that soft-close hinges are a real advantage – no more slamming doors, just great.
Also, make sure the hinges are suitable for 16mm (5/8 inch) thick panels; this is often an overlooked detail.
I can also recommend magnetic catches. They keep the doors closed without the need for handles and look very clean.
And if the doors aren’t perfectly square – don’t worry! Most hinges allow easy fine adjustment, so this can be fixed quickly without any problems.
Good luck with your DIY! 🙂
