Hello everyone,

I have a question that doesn't concern our house but rather a friend's.

They have a fairly standard oil heating system installed, which is fairly new and working fine. Additionally, there is an old water-jacketed stove in the basement, which was used until about 20 years ago whenever there was a large amount of wood available. However, this stove has been out of use for those 20 years.

Now the chimney inspector has suddenly taken issue with it and wants the stove removed altogether. He has even softened his stance to accept just the removal of the flue pipe – but even for that, the stove would need to be moved with considerable effort.

My question is: Can he really require structural measures to be taken to prevent the stove from being put back into operation? He can clearly see the stove is no longer used and could simply place a seal on it.

Maybe someone here knows more about this. I would appreciate any insights 🙂
