ᐅ Door opening inward or outward? What is the standard?

Hello everyone,

Attached is a drawing of our guest bathroom. The wall-mounted installation has unfortunately become almost 21 cm (8 inches) deep due to a ventilation pipe behind it. Because of this, we are now unsure whether the door should open inward or outward.

We will only install a hand washbasin with a depth of 36 cm (14 inches). With this, the door would just be able to open inward without hitting it.

If the door opens outward, it just fits past the front door...

So, which is the lesser problem, or what would be more practical?

Aesthetically, I would actually prefer the door to open inward...

Thank you in advance for all your opinions and tips....

If you want a uniform appearance, you would have to have the door open inward, or install a suitable door that opens outward but has the door flush on the “inside.”

For this reason, choosing a flush door exclusively for a guest toilet in this sense sounds to me like “nobility leads the world to ruin.”

What surprises me a bit is why no one has suggested the safest and most space-saving solution: no door at all!
I would say the nearest emergency services are probably in the next town.
Making it inconvenient for everyday use just to gain some hypothetical advantage in an emergency? I’m not so sure about that.
You can always open a door slightly, even if something much larger is blocking it. Then you just unhinge it or, if needed, cut off the hinges. Basic plumbing 101, I’d say.

Apparently, zizzi has already had some bad experiences. It’s not surprising that there is a greater need for security in that case. Whether others want to apply this to themselves is up to each individual to decide.

Open inward! It works, looks better, and I do not share the security concerns.
