ᐅ Is a hammer drill really necessary if I only need the drill for installing a shelf?

Hello,
my tool collection is not very extensive, and now I want to buy a drill. Do I necessarily need a hammer drill, or is a normal drill sufficient? I just want to hang a shelf, I’m not doing much more than that. My friend says a man without a hammer drill is not a real man!!

I have several drills. For woodworking, I use a drill without a hammer function. When a hole is needed in the wall or floor, the hammer drill is the right tool.

I also think that at least two drills are necessary here. Even when working in the house or apartment, this is essential. A hole often needs to be drilled quickly, and the drill must be ready to hand.

For masonry or wall work, I would definitely recommend getting a hammer drill. However, quality is important. Inexpensive or generic drills often have weak performance, and when you encounter solid masonry, low-quality tools tend to fail. I have experienced this myself. You don’t have to buy one right away. For just a few holes in the wall, you can also borrow or rent a hammer drill for a few days at a low cost.

So, people living in a rental apartment can borrow a hammer drill. However, I own a house, and there is more work to be done here, so I have two drills. One is a hammer drill, and the other is a regular drill. They also differ significantly in weight. But as mentioned before, a good brand is important here.
