Hello everyone, I am considering getting a new shelving unit and have been looking at the IKEA Platsa system. My main question is: Does the PLATSA shelf work well as a bookcase?

I am especially interested in whether the stability of the shelves is sufficient to hold a large number of books without the shelves sagging. Additionally, it is important to me how easy the assembly is and, if needed, how simple it is to rearrange the setup in everyday use, for example if the number of books changes or if I want to adjust the shelving unit.

I would also like to know if anyone has experience with how much space the compartments actually offer, especially for thick, heavy books, and whether the material is easy to maintain if you need to remove marks or dust.

I look forward to your assessments and tips on using PLATSA as a bookcase – comparisons with other units are also welcome if you have found those to work better. Thanks in advance!

I can confirm that Platsa is a solid option as a bookcase, provided certain conditions are met:

- The load capacity per shelf should not be permanently exceeded.
- For especially heavy books, additional reinforcement or using a different series (e.g., Ikea BILLY for higher load capacity) might be advisable.

The ability to customize the dimensions and compartments is a major advantage, especially if you want to consider future expansion of your book collection.

That was also my question before purchasing. I deliberately built shelves with a lighter load, which has proven effective in daily use.
