Hello everyone, I am considering getting a new shelving unit and have been looking at the IKEA Platsa system. My main question is: Does the PLATSA shelf work well as a bookcase?

I am especially interested in whether the stability of the shelves is sufficient to hold a large number of books without the shelves sagging. Additionally, it is important to me how easy the assembly is and, if needed, how simple it is to rearrange the setup in everyday use, for example if the number of books changes or if I want to adjust the shelving unit.

I would also like to know if anyone has experience with how much space the compartments actually offer, especially for thick, heavy books, and whether the material is easy to maintain if you need to remove marks or dust.

I look forward to your assessments and tips on using PLATSA as a bookcase – comparisons with other units are also welcome if you have found those to work better. Thanks in advance!

Hello Mumo9,

to answer your question: IKEA PLATSA can certainly be used as a bookcase, but with some limitations. The shelves are generally designed for lighter loads, so if you want to store many or heavy books, you should pay close attention to the maximum weight capacity specified by IKEA.

I would recommend carefully checking the depth and height of the compartments before purchasing, especially for large coffee table books or reference volumes. PLATSA offers great flexibility for rearranging, which can be very useful for changing collections.

Assembly is fairly straightforward, and the surface can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. However, I suggest wiping up any spills immediately to avoid unsightly water marks. I hope this helps you out a bit.

Hello Mumo9,

I know the feeling when looking for a suitable shelf that is both functional and flexible.

I can confirm that. I have a PLATSA shelf at home, mainly for books, and I find this modularity very practical because you can adjust the compartments at any time and even change the height when new books arrive. However, I have also noticed the stability. If you load many heavy books all at once, the shelves can bend slightly.

What helped me back then was storing the heavy books at the bottom and lighter ones on top. This not only looks better but also increases safety.

Can you say approximately how many books you want to store, or if you have mostly heavy collector’s editions?

Interesting thread, I would like to add a critical perspective. When considering whether IKEA PLATSA also works well as a bookcase, it is important to focus on the technical aspects:

- The shelves are relatively thin and made of particleboard with a plastic laminate surface, which inherently limits the load capacity.
- According to IKEA’s load capacity specifications, individual shelves often support around 15 to 20 kilograms (33 to 44 pounds), but this varies depending on width and depth.

Therefore, if you plan to store many, especially thick and heavy books, I recommend relying not only on appearance but also on actual load tests.

One alternative could be to add extra support boards or intermediate braces, if the design allows.

Regarding assembly and flexibility, I agree with previous comments that the options here are greater than with traditional bookcases.

This is an important point that I want to emphasize. In practice, you quickly notice whether the shelves bend under the weight.

What helped me was choosing the width of the units so that the shelves are not too long. Shorter shelves generally hold up better without extra reinforcement. PLATSA can be configured very flexibly – so it’s better to go for several narrower units if that works for you.

Regarding maintenance: The surface is quite durable, but scratches are, of course, visible. So during planning, make sure to clean regularly and avoid using harsh cleaning agents.

Works well as a bookshelf if you don’t overload any single shelf.

- Shelves may bend under heavy loads
- Flexible and extendable
- Easy-to-maintain surface

Ideal for a medium-weight book collection.
