Hello everyone,
I am planning to secure my IKEA KALLAX shelf to the wall to ensure greater stability and safety. Since my wall is made of drywall, I am unsure which materials and mounting methods are best suited to safely and permanently fix the KALLAX. Does anyone have experience with attaching KALLAX shelves specifically to gypsum board walls? What should I be aware of when drilling and choosing anchors? It would also be helpful to know whether additional anti-tip protection is necessary and how this can be effectively implemented. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I think the whole fear about securing KALLAX to the wall is a bit exaggerated.
Sure, that adds stability, but is it really necessary? The shelf is designed to stand stable even without wall fastening. Of course, I would secure it to the wall, but nailing an entire board behind it seems a bit excessive to me.
I'm not trying to criticize; it’s just that I’ve had good experiences without any of that. If the floor is level, KALLAX stands firmly. Maybe a single anti-tip safety bracket at the top is enough.
I think your "anchor drama" is a bit of an overreaction.

After some research and several installations in similar situations, I would like to add the following:
For drywall construction, the maximum load capacity per fastening point using a suitable hollow wall anchor is usually between 20-35 kg (44-77 lbs), depending on the type of anchor and wall thickness.
A 4x4 KALLAX can weigh between 70 and 100 kg (154-220 lbs) depending on the load. Therefore, multiple attachment points (at least 2-3) are recommended.
Additionally, screws used on profiles in metal stud framing require special metal drill bits and self-tapping metal screws, as regular wood screws will not hold.
If you plan to fill the shelf with items such as books and equipment, I would definitely recommend using wooden battens or a support structure to distribute the loads evenly and avoid point overload on the drywall panels.

However, my wall isn’t perfectly flat, and I want to minimize the risk of the shelf tipping, especially since there are pets and occasionally children in the household.
