Hello everyone, I’m currently thinking about how to best organize my new KALLAX shelf unit – should I use the matching baskets or the drawers instead? I’m especially interested in hearing about the advantages and disadvantages you’ve experienced in practice: Do you mostly use the baskets because they are more flexible, or do you prefer the drawers due to better organization? My use case is a bit mixed: I want to keep things tidy but also have quick access to everything. Maybe the type of items stored also plays a role? Looking forward to your experiences and what works best for you!
Basically, drawers in the KALLAX unit are especially suitable for smaller, well-organized items and thoughtful storage systems. They provide direct access without the need to rearrange other items.
This argues in favor of drawers, as they make it easier to quickly take out individual pieces. Baskets, on the other hand, offer more storage space for bulkier items and are more flexible in use, but they can appear less organized.
From a practical perspective, it is advisable to choose a combination – for example, drawers for small parts and baskets for larger or less structured items. Additionally, baskets are often easier to access when the contents change frequently.

This is brilliant, such a discussion! 🙂 Personally, I mostly fill my KALLAX with baskets because I love the flexibility! I can take the baskets out and carry them directly, which is super practical when I need to grab several items from the shelf at once.
That’s exactly what I mean! Additionally, I use different baskets with small inner compartments, which keeps things organized despite the flexibility. I often find drawers too restrictive, and it takes me too long to search for things in them, especially when I want to store many different items.
I also really like that baskets can look good visually. 🙂 If you like color, you can choose really nice sets depending on the season or mood.

Hello Monica, that’s a very practical question that many people have when using KALLAX shelves. I’m happy to explain the different aspects you should consider:
First, it’s important to know what type of items you want to store. Baskets offer flexible storage and are easy to take in and out. This makes access easier and allows the shelf to be used in various ways. At the same time, baskets usually have a more casual look, which suits a more open or relaxed interior style well.
I agree with that, although baskets are not the best solution if you have many small items that tend to get mixed up easily. This is where drawers come into play:
Drawers provide better organization and protect against dust. They are ideal for small items that need to be sorted and stored separately. Often, they are also easier to stack or can be enhanced with organizers.
That’s my advice: combine baskets and drawers depending on your needs. For example, in my small workshop, I store tools and screws in drawers, while larger materials go into baskets.
If you want, I can also share some organization ideas that have proven helpful with KALLAX.
