Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and now I’m trying to decide whether to place it lying down (laid flat on its side) or upright (standing). I’m mainly wondering how the stability, load capacity, and usability differ depending on the orientation.

Does anyone have experience with whether the KALLAX unit is less stable when lying down, or if there might even be advantages compared to the upright position? Perhaps regarding its appearance or storage options?

I would really appreciate any opinions and tips from people who have been using this shelving unit for a while! Thanks in advance.

The question of whether to position a KALLAX shelf unit lying down or standing upright primarily depends on the intended use.

From a stability perspective, standing the unit upright is generally more stable, as the shelves are oriented perpendicular to the load, which allows the material to handle stress more effectively. Additionally, the load capacity per compartment—both at the top and bottom—is optimized, preventing deformation.

When lying flat, the load profile changes. While the unit can then be used as a lower, wider storage space, the internal dividers are not designed for this type of load, which can lead to permanent warping.

In my experience, KALLAX shelves are fundamentally better suited to being positioned upright.

I have my KALLAX standing upright. It’s more stable and provides better access to the compartments. I have never seen it placed horizontally.

I understand well why people consider how to best position the KALLAX, as it is not just a piece of furniture but often also part of our living atmosphere.

Overall, standing it upright is more stable

I agree completely – I once tried it lying flat, and then had to constantly make sure everything fit and didn’t slip. That made me feel somewhat uneasy.

Maybe someone has a great idea on how to use it lying down safely and effectively? I’m open to tips, as sometimes a flat position is indeed more practical in the living space.

Thanks to everyone who shares their experiences!

I think it is important not to focus solely on stability here.

how stability, load capacity, and usability vary depending on orientation

The usability changes significantly. Vertically, the shelves are very suitable for books, binders, or decorations.

When the KALLAX is used horizontally, it becomes wider and deeper, but you lose the open shelving look. The dividers are not designed as shelves, so when placed horizontally, the weight distribution changes and stability can be affected.

What is interesting, though, is that for a lowboard effect, such as a TV stand, the unit can work very well when laid flat, as long as the weight can be properly distributed.

However, I find it problematic that placing it horizontally increases the risk of material fatigue more quickly. So, if it is used only temporarily in a horizontal position, that works fine, but for permanent use, I recommend the upright orientation.

I have my KALLAX set up vertically in the classic way and I’m very satisfied.

It’s somehow more practical because I can reach things more easily. And I think the look benefits from using it this way.

Flat as a lowboard effect, the shelf can work really well

Sounds interesting, I haven’t tried it yet, but I imagine it would look cool 🙂

It really depends on what you want to make of it. Lying flat, you might be able to create some cool DIY projects.
