ᐅ Is an extractor hood necessary?

Hello everyone,

we are building a KfW40 house and have been advised by several sources against using a cooker hood with exhaust ventilation, as you then need to worry about sealing it off when the hood is turned off. Exhaust ventilation is not very important to me anyway.

This raises the question: do you even need an exhaust hood with a ventilation system, or does the ventilation system take care of it automatically?

You seem to have either not read or not understood the previous posts. If you plan to budget around 500 for a range hood, you won’t be happy with a recirculating model; it will be very noisy on one hand and, as a downside, also inefficient. You should look into an exhaust (ducted) system instead.

I have the mentioned Berbel... what a mess. It might also explain the tiny spots on the ceiling (only visible from about 10cm (4 inches) away) next to the hood – until now, I suspected the blender.

I will investigate more thoroughly over the weekend.

A properly functioning hood requires that it is turned on a few minutes in advance and left running for a while afterwards.

As mentioned, the Miele hood that performed well in consumer tests costs about 500€ (around $540).
The Berbel one, which costs about 2000€ (around $2160), scored significantly worse.
My focus on the 500€ (around $540) model is not about the price but because of the test results.
