I recently purchased an IKEA PLATSA system and am currently taking care of the plastic components on the frame and doors. Since these parts are made of plastic, I’m wondering which cleaning and maintenance products are suitable without making the material dull or causing it to degrade.
Does anyone have tips on how to best clean and maintain the plastic surfaces to prevent both dirt buildup and microscopic scratches? Are there any products that should definitely be avoided because they can damage the plastic?
I’m also interested in experiences with long-term care, as the material can wear out quickly with frequent use.

Polypropylene and ABS are durable plastics, but they are sensitive to UV radiation and certain chemicals. Indoors, UV exposure is hardly a factor, but aggressive cleaning agents can promote microscopic cracks.
A professional way to preserve the surfaces is to use a mild plastic conditioner that removes residual moisture while forming a thin, breathable protective layer. When applied correctly, this layer should not become sticky or attract dust.
It is important that no residue remains after application; therefore, excess product should be wiped off with a clean cloth after it has been absorbed.
Ultimately, regular but not excessive maintenance can make the plastic more resistant to mechanical stress. For household use, however, it is usually sufficient to rely on mild cleaners and soft cloths.
