Hello dear home builders,

Do you have a water softening system? Is it really worth it, or is it just a money-making scheme?
Our architect recommended one to us, but the question is whether the 3000 euros really justify it.
I think that’s a lot of money.

It depends on how hard your water is. In our area, it's 28 dH, with hard water starting at 14 dH. A water softening system using ion exchange makes sense in this case. We have a rather obscure filter in our apartment building that doesn't help at all.

I would recommend checking if the local water utility or municipality plans to install a softening system soon. In my hometown, which had a similar water hardness to where I live now, this was already done, and the water has been noticeably softer since then. In that case, you could probably save the money.

What level of water hardness do you have?

As long as it’s not one of those obscure magnetic descalers, I do think it has some effect. Whether it’s worth it for you is something you’ll have to decide yourself.

We have one, reduced from 20dh to 8dh (we had this in our previous apartment, but it was a different water area). My wife would move out if we didn’t have one. The cost including installation was 3000, maintenance is about 75 per year.

We are also considering it... of course, 3000 € is a lot of money, but our neighbors recently had one installed and are completely thrilled... less detergent, less shampoo, no descaler needed....

There is also an alternative to the "expensive" devices; here in Heidelberg, they are made by the same company. Our neighbors only paid 1,500 € including installation. So it’s worth looking around.

Try searching for the company Grünbeck. Our system will be from this company. It costs about 1,500€ including installation.
