ᐅ Do you have a tendency toward perfectionism when it comes to your home?

You, like me, have probably noticed in various threads that I didn’t plan and think through everything in detail. How about you? Did you have clear ideas and were you able to implement them 100%? If not, what percentage of the result matched your planning and wishes at the time you moved into your house? How much or what did you change or wish for differently later on?
(Just one example: tiles in the bathrooms and/or on the floor. Some of you calculate, based on the tile size, which was chosen deliberately, whether and where “cutting” can be avoided or arranged in an aesthetically pleasing way. As mentioned, just an example, this is not meant to be a tiling discussion.)

Otherwise, I would build exactly the same again.
In our initial construction drawings, there were a few areas that felt a bit awkward or complicated to implement. I spent weeks working through each of these issues, really pondering them deeply. And that was a good and important process! Solutions were found for all points, usually so simple that I later wondered why no one had noticed them earlier. Above all, I was glad that we allowed ourselves time for this discovery process. Also, by engaging so intensively with the plans, I became very familiar with them, which helped me respond confidently to inquiries and decisions. Whenever I felt uncertain, I slept on it… we always had that much time.
I always had very clear ideas (collected on Pinterest boards) about what I wanted from a house and how it should look.
When faced with reality, I had to realize that my dreams didn’t match my non-millionaire budget.
Then I started to come to terms with compromises, and my husband and I prioritized together what was worth spending money on and what wasn’t.
Overall, it wasn’t a very perfectionist approach. Some decisions (like tiles, for example) we made instinctively because we liked them at the showroom, and we also followed the recommendations of the material consultant, which turned out to be some of the best choices we made.
There were so many things to choose from that it was overwhelming at times. I’m glad we selected the tiles pretty much on the spot. Nowadays, when I go into my bathroom, I think, “Wow, this is beautiful!” instead of, “Hmm, I wonder if the other tiles would have been better?” 🙂

For example, the tiles in the bathroom—although I couldn’t fully achieve the Mediterranean style I wanted because the right tiles simply weren’t available. I spent a lot of time searching for tiles and even brought some over from the Czech Republic (my husband was starting to get a bit annoyed). Now I enjoy my bathroom every day, especially the open shower, which gives a holiday-like feeling.
I wasn’t very particular about the walls. We went with a Q2 finish and painted them directly. Anyway, there will be furniture in front of most walls, pictures hanging or yet to be hung, and some areas will be repainted later, so that’s perfectly fine for us. And if I don’t like a wall someday, I can always change it in the future.
Otherwise, I enjoy our new home every day. It turned out almost exactly as we imagined. It’s so much nicer than our old house—even without KNX, controlled ventilation, etc. It’s simply a great place to live.

There’s already a lot in front of the walls, and pictures are either hanging or will be added soon, plus some areas will get paint later—that’s perfectly fine with us. And if I ever dislike a wall in the future, I can just change it.
